Frosted glass solution using Garnet abrasive blasting
In modern spaces, glass is no longer just a building material. Thanks to sandblasting techniques using Garnet abrasive, glass can be transformed into an artistic feature, adding elegance and uniqueness to any design.
Why use Garnet for glass etching and frosting?
Garnet abrasive has a standard hardness of 7.5 to 8.0 on the Mohs scale—hard enough to create the necessary roughness on glass surfaces, yet safe enough not to crack or damage thin glass. Thanks to its sharp-edged natural crystal structure, Garnet delivers smooth, soft, and highly detailed patterns. One major advantage is that it contains no free silica—a harmful substance known to cause lung diseases—making it safe for workers. In addition, Garnet has highly uniform grain sizes, especially in Mesh 80 and Mesh 120, resulting in frosted glass surfaces that look clean and even, without blotches or rough patches. During blasting, Garnet produces very little dust, keeping the workspace cleaner and more eco-friendly.
To properly frost and etch glass using Garnet abrasive, the blasting process must be carried out with precision. First, the glass surface must be thoroughly cleaned of dust, grease, or any residue to ensure good adhesion of the abrasive. Then, depending on the design requirements, the appropriate mesh is selected: Mesh 80 for even, light frosting; Mesh 120 for fine, detailed patterns. If specific designs are needed, stencils or templates should be applied to the glass surface. The blasting is then done using moderate pressure—between 3 and 5 bar—to achieve deep and even roughness without weakening the glass. Finally, after blasting, the surface should be carefully inspected to ensure that the patterns are clearly visible, sharp, and free from smudging or peeling.
Thanks to Garnet abrasive blasting technology, frosted glass products have become more diverse and widely used in practice. From office glass partitions and bathroom doors to outdoor glass railings and upscale interior dividers—all can be elegantly designed with soft matte surfaces or unique patterns. Some businesses even use this technique to etch logos or brand symbols onto glass, adding a touch of sophistication to commercial spaces.
